It’s truly hard to deny the fact that everyone desires control over their own lives—whether it’s mastering a skill, climbing the ladder of success, or simply finding inner peace. But one thing is for certain: dominion doesn’t come easily. No, it requires a significant amount of effort.
When we think about human dominion, it’s clear that this word refers to more than just control; it’s about being the rightful ruler of your life. It’s an achievement—an ongoing struggle to overcome and rise above. But here’s the most exciting part: the keys to that dominion are available to you. It’s not some far-off, unreachable dream.
You see, “dominion” comes from the Greek word kurios, which signifies lordship, sovereignty, and inherited rulership. In the New Testament, dominion represents absolute control and authority.
Yet, we can’t ignore the fact that human dominion doesn’t come naturally. As I was walking through life and trying to understand this concept, I realized something—it’s a constant struggle.
Whether it’s the cowboy who tames a wild horse or the politician striving for office, each person must exert tremendous effort to gain dominion in their respective field. It doesn’t just happen.
In fact, we’re either claiming dominion or losing ground to slavery.
And here’s the thing—slavery is what the devil desperately desires for each of us.
His efforts to enslave us never stop, but in the grand scheme of things, there’s something far greater at play.
One man, Adam, tragically lost the dominion that God had originally given humanity. But the moment Jesus Christ stepped onto the scene, everything changed.
He boldly declared, “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed” (John 8:36). Through His victory on the cross, we’ve been set free from the devil’s control—so long as we choose to walk in that freedom.
What I didn’t realize at first was how profoundly that freedom impacts our ability to reign in life.
Jesus didn’t just die to give us temporary release; He died so we could forever rule.
Romans 5:17 states that “much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.” The Amplified Bible expands on this and tells us that we will “reign as kings in life.” Think about that for a moment.
It might feel almost impossible to grasp, but if you’ve accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior, the right to reign is already yours. You hold the authority to dominate situations, not be dominated by them. Yet, the challenge remains: don’t allow the enemy to dictate your life—remember, you are meant to dominate him.
If you haven’t yet taken that step to join God’s royal family, today might just be the perfect time. Don’t let the opportunity pass you by.
As Romans 10:9-10 clearly states, “if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
Three Realms of Dominion: Spirit, Soul, and Body
Now that we understand the overarching truth of human dominion, we must delve into the three realms where this dominion can be experienced: spirit, soul, and body.
I can’t help but wonder if we fully appreciate the weight of this truth. In 1 Thessalonians 5:22-23, we’re told that God desires to sanctify our entire being—our whole spirit, soul, and body.
This is crucial because each of these aspects must operate in harmony to live dominion. God created us to function holistically, not compartmentally. Our spirit was meant to rule over our soul and body, serving as the king of our triune nature.
When I first encountered this idea, it really hit me—there’s an order to things.
God, being a Spirit (John 4:24), created us in His image. And in that image, He designed us with a spirit that connects directly to Him. It’s our spirit that allows us to communicate with the God.
It’s in the quiet moments of reflection where we feel God’s presence most profoundly. Trust me, I’ve experienced this first-hand. Our spirit is designed to lead the way, with the soul serving as its servant, and the body obediently carrying out the will of the spirit.
Take a moment to think about Adam—before his disobedience. Adam’s spirit was perfectly aligned with God’s will.
He was in constant communion with his Creator, walking freely in the garden, speaking openly with God.
His spirit dominated his life, and because of that, he experienced peace, joy, and unity. His environment—everything around him—was in perfect harmony.
However, the moment Adam chose to listen to his body and soul instead of his spirit, everything changed. His spirit died, and with it, his connection to God was severed.
It wasn’t just the fall of man in a spiritual sense; it was the collapse of his entire being. His soul and body were left to rule, and this created chaos, confusion, and disorder in his life.
This is why our journey to human dominion starts with spiritual renewal. We must allow our spirits to reign once more, bringing everything under control and aligning it with God’s divine purpose.
Reclaiming Your Dominion Today
What surprised me the most was how accessible this dominion is. It’s not a far-off dream; it’s a reality waiting for those who accept their rightful place. I remember feeling lost and uncertain about what dominion even looked like in my own life.
But after years of struggle, prayer, and digging into God’s Word, I found myself realizing something powerful: dominion is not just about external control—it’s about internal alignment with God’s purpose.
Mark my words: the devil will constantly try to pull you away from your rightful position. But when you place your spirit in charge, your soul and body will follow. You have the power to dominate life—not just by overcoming obstacles, but by living in peace, purpose, and prosperity in all three realms of your existence.
